I wonder though if you talked to a local glass shop if they couldn't come up with something for you. I used to have a slider that was almost 8 ft tall, what I did when I replaced it with french doors to add a transome above it. Have you thought of replacing the slider with french doors? There are several companies who make them specifically to fit in the same opening. Never heard of such a thing.
