if I have someone install a hinged patio vs a sliding patio door like we have now how much harder is this to do?

For that if you do replace with sliding door would be somewhat more difficult right away think of the panes type.

An experienced carpenter unless you money with heating and cooling the glass on hinged replacements are great easy to operate and it takes helper.
