Can I make a skylight out of a glass patio door?

Posted by admin
Jon H asked:

I have access to used but functional sliding glass patio doors for $4 each. (Materials recycling center). Can I just frame out a curb and flash it and put the door over the curb and seal it? It would span joists in a cathedral ceiling. I would not cut the joists. Any ideas? Thanks much…//Jon

That might work. My first instinct was “NO!” Let us know how it works if you try it.

The panels two feet apart to the panels two feet of width seal it well and pay close attention to receive.

      You won’t like my answer.
This is much to large of a pc. of glass to have hanging over your head and others that may be in your home. Skylights are made to withstand air pressure from the exterior and from the interior. Patio doors are installed vertical, they are not designed to be placed horizontal or on any angle. So you have the potential for the glass to work itself out of the perimeter by deflection.
Next you have to maintain some type of waterproof seal around the panel and the curb. It over time will become a silicone infested hodge podge of attempts to stop it from leaking.
Your idea has been tried before believe me.
Patio doors that are salvaged are good for some things. A hot house for plant lovers, etc. I would leave it at that.
They are $4 each for a reason - the guy who has them thinks $4 ea. will save him from taking them to the landfill at $4 a gallon for gas.
