Where can I find information on organic gardening for patios?

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
Sarah asked:

I live in an apartment, but grew up in the country. One thing I miss about that was having the space to have a garden. I also live in Arizona (moved from Louisiana) so the climate is much different from what I’m used to.

Does anyone know where I can find any information on starting an organic, edible garden with limited space, such as on a patio?

Was it wrong to use stonedust mixed with gravel in the bases for my in-progress flagstone and brick patios?

Saturday, June 18th, 2011
lets_tally asked:

I have two patio now under construction in my backyard, in holes I dug mostly myself to a depth of from 10 to 18 inches. One, to be covered using flagstone, is 500 sq. ft, while the circular one, to be paved with brick, is of 14 ft diameter.

The contractor indicated he would lay grade “B” gravel underneath and grade “A” 3/4″ stone in the next layer, both on top of geotextile, and compact every 2 inches. He did lay the geotextile, but put down a combination of what looks more like stonedust mixed with gravel,. He didn’t even try to compact until the end.

As we understand it, the will cause water to accumulate like a sponge. We live in Ottawa, Canada, where there is lots of freezing and unfreezing due to seasonal changes, and you can imagine what problems with the base that might cause.

Note that the holes holding the base stone do not drain water well anyways, due to clay bottoms. Nevertheless, is there a justification for what has been put down as a base?

Has anyone ever used those concrete molds for patios/walkways?

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011
boz4425 asked:

I need to know how those work? You know, the mold that looks like stone and you fill it with concrete and make a path or do a patio with it?

The instructions say to pour cement into the mold then remove it and rotate and repeat. What I want to know. Can you fill it with cement and remove it right away like it says to….or will the cement just run back together? Do I have to let it dry a while? That will take forever if I do…but want to do it right the first time.
Thanks!!!!
If you’re not going to answer the question that I asked…then DON”T ANSWER!! If I wanted to buy a crate of stone ….I WOULD!!! But the project I’m doing would cost WELL over $200 to complete in stone…hence the cement mold!

How do you get rid of bees that build their nests in the ground around patios and sidewalks?

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011
sassysuze45 asked:

I am not sure if these bees are honeybees or what but they have nested there and bore down into the ground so I have no idea how big the nests actually are. I got stung mowing the grass today because I stepped on the nest not realizing it was there and about 100 bees swarmed out of the nest. They look like yellow jackets.

For removing slippery green algae growth from brick patios & steps, is it better to use vinegar or bleach?

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011
Celi asked:

And which——if either——-is less damaging to surrounding plant growth? Would a coating of fine sand spread over bricks serve to erode away the algae growth?
And yes, I know I could just try several things and find out for myself, but with so much expertise out there on Y!Answers, why waste the effort!
