P Malcolm asked:

Anyone who has a cat or dog knows that the little critters love to go in and out of the house. To make it easier for the pet owner and the pet, installing a patio pet door is often the best solution. When building a patio pet door, it is important to have all of the essential information before you buy the building supplies.

The following is a guide to building a patio pet door.

1. Measure your pet to determine the size of the pet door. The pet should be able to go in and out of the door easily. The patio pet door should be at least as tall as your pet’s shoulder. Your pet should not crouch as it enters and exits. Once you have measured the pet, measure the spot where you will be making the door. Make sure you have an accurate width. As well, measure from the inside track of the top of the patio door to the inside track of the bottom of the patio door.

2. Determine the type of door you meets your needs. If you live in an area that has cold and snowy winters, consider a double pane door.

3. Use tape to mark on the screen door where the patio door will be installed.

4. Remove your screen door. Take a piece of plywood or particle board that is a bit larger than the size of the patio pet door and slip it under the screen door where you marked the patio door spot with the tape.

5. Take the two halves of your pet door and place one half behind the screen door and on top of your piece of wood. Position the pet door frame where you want it located.

6. Use a utility knife to cut the screen to make the door opening. This cutting location is where the door frame is positioned.

7. Take the other half of the pet door and lay it over the half that is between the screen door and the wood. Hammer the two halves together so they are fixed to each other.

8. Hold door the up and test it to see if it works properly. The magnetic lock should be keeping the door closed.

9. Reinstall the screen door with the built pet patio door. Try to get your pet to walk through it. A dog will use its nose to open the patio door to come into the home and push against the door to leave the home.

Pet doors are a great method of allowing your pets to freely enter and exit the home, especially if you work all day long because it will allow the pet to go outside to go to the bathroom. There are many types of patio pet doors available. There are even electronic types of patio doors that work with a magnetic key attached to the pet’s collar.

Electronic patio doors are great because they keep other critters from coming into the home. Most pets learn how to use them quite quickly. There will be a bit of training so use positive reinforcement techniques such as rewarding the pet when it enters and exits the door. There are many different types available through online pet door retailers so one can find the right door that will meet their needs, as well as their pet’s needs.

Cristian Stan asked:

One of the first things to consider before thinking of installing a glass patio door yourself is, are you up to it? By that I mean are your DIY skills and tool kit up to it?

Installing a glass patio door is a relatively straight forward job and should not be beyond the enthusiastic DIY’er. Here, we will discuss what considerations you must take into account before starting work.

Next in the itinerary is where to best locate a glass patio door, you need to think long and hard about this before you get out your sledge hammer. Here are a few of points that may help you in your decision of patio door location.

Very often glass patio doors are fitted to facilitate an attractive view and access to a garden either from a lounge or dining area or maybe from the kitchen. This can enhance your property even to the extent of adding value so it is important that you get it right first time.

Consider that the amount of foot traffic may increase regarding extra wear and tear on your dining room or lounge carpet or flooring. If you are replacing a conventional hinged door with a glass patio door think through the logistics of which way the door will slide in relation to walls and furniture.

Think about how the sun-light in the room will be affected and how the sun can fade carpets and furnishings, so you may need solar coated glass or blinds.

Once you have thought through your patio door positioning you need to pay a visit to you local builders merchant or DIY center. Have a look at what they have on offer and very often they will have a leaflet that will give you step by step instructions of how to fit glass patio doors standing on your head, pick one of those up, however, I do not recommend you tackle any DIY job standing on your head because you will find that your pencil will not stay behind your ear.

Have a good chat with an enlightened member of staff about their product range also it is very important to consider security when you finally decide on your purchase. You will find many “how to do it” books and a wealth of information on the Internet also find that old DIY manual in the attic to see if patio door installation is covered. So, in essence, do your research before starting work.

OK so you have made your decision and you know where the door is going. It is important that you read thoroughly the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation and safety. “Do not attempt to install this patio door while standing on your head”.

Bear in mind that installing a glass patio door is not a one man or woman job, you will need help and I don’t mean asking your two year old to pass you the hammer I mean enlist the help of friends or family preferably that have a modicum of DIY knowledge although their main purpose may be muscle power and making tea.

Well you are ready, you know where the patio door is going, you have the patio door, you have all the necessary tools and you have the help. You will soon have your new glass patio door fitted and it will look splendid.

Ron Victor asked:

Patio doors open a room to the outdoors. They allow light in and let you see out. For many times you do not want others to look in, patio doors could be fitted with options that provide privacy. You can screen your door. Many patio doors will be having sliding patio screens to keep out bugs. If your door has a screen but not providing any privacy, then visit your local hardware shop and ask about privacy screen that can fit your frame. If your patio doors do not have a screen, you can add one. If you have a standard door, home development stores may have a screen in stock that could be directly installed with no modifications.

Bamboo screens will roll up and down so as to protect your doors and windows. The bamboo screens are reasonably priced and are easy to install. They generally take three or four hooks installed over the door. The screen clips onto the hooks is rolled up or down as needed. Drapes or curtains could be installed on the wall inside the door frame. Hanging rods and hardware are obtainable at hardware and department stores. Heavier drapes will be expensive and can be more challenging to install. Lightweight curtains take a simple rod and could be quickly pulled to one end and tied.

Holiday door covers are a fun and a fast way to provide privacy. These huge decorative vinyl decorations are meant to cover your front door. They are available for you at dollar stores and department stores. Use removal tape to put a colorful or serene picture over the door. They are cheap and could be changed with the season. Temporary privacy could be a family project. Use a butcher paper cut and taped to fit the door. Make it a family project to poster paint designs on the paper. You can use a felt pen or brush to paint the lines in a grid on the paper like panes on a window. This will make individual blocks for every person to do their design. When the paint dries thoroughly, then it can be put on the door with removable tape. Though this is not a permanent solution it can provide a few days of family privacy and leisure.

Sun films could be installed on patio door glass. The shades come in light to dark film. You can look out but it is not simple to see in. Light adhesive will hold the film in its place. Sun film must not be installed on thermo pane windows as it might affect the warranty. Better check with a commercial installer who provides a separate warranty against damage from sun film. Tinted PVC or vinyl film is also capable of providing privacy and is carried by some fabric stores. It is less luxurious than sun film and is held in place by static. Just put it up on wet doors, squeegee it in place, and finally peel it off when you do not need it. As with the sun film, tinted film could also affect the warranty on thermo pane windows.

I am looking to replace a sliding patio door with French doors?

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010
CctbOh asked:

I am confused about the different materials that the doors are made from. The door will not be directly exposed to any weather as it will be between the entrance to a unheated/uncooled sunroom. I’ve looked at steel doors at Lowes and Home Depot which are relatively cheap compared to custom ordering a door. Would one of the steel doors be that I can buy in stock now be suitable for my situation?

Dominic Donaldson asked:

Protecting your personal property is a major factor in modern day living. With hi-fi and wi-fi, plasma TV and Wii, each home on average has thousands of pounds worth of electrical goods. These goods can fetch a pretty penny on the ’second hand’ market, and therefore are a desirable haul for suburban opportunists, for want of a better term. There was a time when the family fortunes were tied up in the family jewels, and a safety box behind an oil painting did the job of deterring a burglar. But with electrical goods that are part and parcel of everyday life, there isn’t the option of hiding the goods from prying eyes, so home security has to take a new stance.

Implementing security systems can be a costly and some say a false economy. Cameras and floodlights can all be sabotaged by the most incompetent thief, and often draw attention to a residence. The presence of expensive security equipment is like a neon sign saying that there is a veritable treasure chest of goods inside that are well worth trying to steal. The better option for deterring a break-in is a more subtle method. Simply make your house a fortress the old fashioned way. The biggest deterrent is by making the place look secure whilst not giving away that there is much of any consequence inside.

I’m not talking moat, drawbridge and portcullis here, but external doors and windows have to be well made and sturdy without making the property look like Alcatraz gaol. It is important to keep these external features in line with the aesthetics of the property to avoid reducing the value of your home, and the best way to do this is by having external doors specially made for the property. Many insurance companies expect doors to have deadbolts or mortise locks for security reasons, and if you don’t have these already, the insurance terms may be compromised, so investing in new doors has an immediate financial incentive.

External doors can be manufactured from hardwood for an authentic period look to suit a Victorian, Edwardian or rural property. They can also be made from a composite of materials that have properties that exceed the reliability of traditional timber. Composites are generally UV resistant and so do not fade after exposure to the sun, keeping the exterior looking maintained; and a well maintained house looks like a protected one. There are also a number of types of patio doors with double and triple glazed safety glass that can be installed at the rear of a property that will be a secure yet attractive addition to the home.

Other security measures can be a little more subtle, but deterrents are still the key. Having exotic foliage with spiny leaves under windows is not perceived by many as a security feature, but an opportunistic burglar will think twice if considering a break in, as it makes a clean escape less likely. Flower beds are also likely to keep prying eyes away from windows, as footprints are commonly used as evidence in a break-in scenario. However, none of these factors outweigh the impact of a secure and well maintained door to protect the family fortress from foraging thieves.

Bill Spiez asked:

When getting ready to install new French patio doors into your home, there are two  styles to choose from:Gliding patio doors and hinged patio doors. Hinged patio doors open and close like conventional doors, and with an outswing design  will  save a great deal of interior space.  Plus , their look can be  accentuated  with the addition of a number of  beautiful features that add to the classic look of the doors. One  popular  feature is to add grilles, which breaks up sunlight  breathtakingly  as it enters the home. As with all doors, hinged patio doors should always be positioned within the normal flow of traffic in and out of the home. They’re  ideal for decks, bedrooms, patios and balconies. The addition of French patio doors to any room of your home will be sure to add natural light and a timeless beauty.

When  area  is  limited , gliding doors allow you to come and go  easily  without having to be concerned about  interior or exterior furniture placement or  possible exterior obstacles. A gliding patio door  has two or more panels made with glass, with one panel  sliding past the other, to give your home a  modern, yet classical feel . As with  most  hinged patio doors, gliding patio doors  should be  placed  within the normal flow of traffic in and out of your home.

Selecting  the patio doors that are right for you all come down to preference. No matter which doors you choose, French patio doors will fill your home with natural sunlight every day of the year. These beautiful additions have been  displayed  since first installed at the Palace of Versailles, and will give your home the endearing beauty of a classical palace, or a modern villa. Whatever style of French patio doors you choose will be a fine decision that will immediately add excellence and prestige to your home.

How to install a end plank of a laminated floor next to the patio door?

Thursday, May 6th, 2010
Boyang asked:

The flooring is installed vertically, and the patio door is horizontal. I know I can use an End Moulding horizontally to cover the floor end and to attach to the door’s dottom frame. But I saw some new homes and they do not have a end moulding. They just use a (narrow) plank to connect the floor and the door’s bottom frame. How does this work do? Thanks
