What is a good quality patio door?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
maxton asked:

The doors should be swinging, energy efficient and able to take direct expousre to heavy rain, high humidty and direct sun in typical for the US gulf states area. There is no overhang to protect the doors. I need a door material that can mount wooden blinds to cover the door window.

The pull is flush mounted with a rotating cam type lock. The thumb lever used to open the cam, inorder to slide the door, is broken and I’m missing a key. WR Hardare and Replacement Hardware in FL were of no help; any other sources would be appreciated.

Cristian Stan asked:

Is your patio door looking tired and weather beaten, has it seen better days? Patio doors do tend to get a bit of a hammering with all that Mother Nature throws at it.

If bits are stiff or falling off it may be time to replace your patio door. “That’s going to be expensive”. I hear you say. Well, I say, not necessarily, even with some basic DIY skills and tools you could, quite easily, replace the doors yourself.

A Guide to Replacing Your Own Patio Doors:

1. Removal of the patio door should be straight forward, just be careful when handling any glass panels. Take your door apart in sections by removing the sliding door and the fixed unit and any screws.

2. Remove the security panel that prevents the sliding door from being raised, and then remove the door from its slide rail, removing any screws.

3. Take the second panel out using the same method, removing any screws. Take out the rollers using a screwdriver.

4. Removal of the main frame should be easy. Inspect the area that was under the frame making sure that it is clear of any remaining screws, bits of wood or metal.

5. Using wedges make sure the new patio door frame is straight, square and level ready to receive the new door. Secure the door frame with frame fixers.

6. Insert the new sliding door by threading the top of the door so that it locates on the top slide rail of the frame then swing the bottom of the door in and let it gently drop on to the lower slide rail.

7. Make any adjustment to the door, door lock and slide mechanism and make sure the door opens and closes fully and smoothly and that it locks and unlocks easily.

8. Fit any trim pieces to make a nice tidy looking job. Repair any plaster work that may have been damaged when removing the old frame.

9. Seal the outside frame with mastic or silicon for a good weather seal.

If in doubt about replacing your patio door consult a professional. Read the instructions that were provided with your new door and follow any safety recommendations.

Patio doors enhance your property’s appearance and have great practical value they may even add value to your property so it’s worth making sure they look good and are regularly checked for smooth running.

Make sure the slide rails stay clear of debris and little stones that may hinder the sliding action of the door and may cause damage.

Choosing patio doors to enhance your property is a good choice for three main reasons.

1. Practical uses - A convenient access to, and view of, a garden from a lounge or dining room, for example.

2. Gaining light - The extra natural light your property will gain, especially older buildings with small windows, makes patio doors an ideal choice.

3. Increased property value - Buyers love patio doors with access to a garden.

Due to modern advances in window and door technology it is possible to buy patio doors that will match your overall building design. There are many features available such as Georgian and mock Tudor designs and a choice of hard-wood or PVC.

If wood is your choice of material make sure it is hard-wood and not soft-wood. Hard-wood resists the ravages of Mother Nature where as soft-wood will warp, expand and contract greatly with changes of humidity and temperature creating either drafts or sticking doors.

If you are the owner of an old period house and you are considering either installing a new patio door or replacing an existing door or window with one, you must ensure your property has no restrictions to such changes. You may, for example, have a grade II listed building in which case you will need to consult the powers that be before installing your patio doors.

Have a look round your local DIY store or builders merchant; they generally have a vast range on display that you can touch and feel. There are many specialist companies that have show rooms so that you can get an idea of what is available to suit your older property.

My dog tried to jump up into my house but banged into the patio door. He shook his head and wrinkled his nose?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009
Love’s Excelling Way asked:

and seemed okay. Should I be worried? He didn’t run into it. He hopped up from the 2 steps and I heard a bang. I guess the patio door was so clean and see through. I just moved here on Saturday and I think he’s not used to having a backyard and a glass door.

Stop laughing. I am wondering if he is okay or if I need to do something to test if he’s okay. Help please? Stop laughing.
