Johnathan Gerber asked:

The last two decades we witnessed a rapid transformation in the market for patio door blinds. Consumers now have the Crème de la Crème of materials and designs to choose from. Gone are the days where you have to be satisfied with flimsy blinds made out of dodgy material, best associated with the ‘abandoned apartment’ you stayed in when you were in College. Consumers have choice and decorators are having fun with it!

Patio blinds are available in a variety of different shapes; One of the most popular among these horizontal blinds. These are easy to open and close, and maintenance of the blinds are relatively easy – a thorough dust-off every week with quarterly water cleaning normally does the trick. They are available in a range of materials, ranging from aluminium through to vinyl. The single biggest factor in choosing horizontal patio door blinds is your interior decor. These blinds blend in perfectly with modern furniture, where the theme is minimalistic with sleek undertones.

Off course if your living room has a more old-fashioned look and feel, do not despair. The market for patio door blinds is large enough to accommodate for just about any kind of design.

Wood has always been successfully used by decorators to create a warm and cosy effect in a room. Years ago, the designers of door blinds have taken cue from these wise men, and incorporated wood into the production of blinds. We all owe them a healthy dose of gratitude, as these designs are great for your patio door. Long vertical wood blinds are in style with a large number of homeowners. Also a favourite among many is bamboo blinds. This type can help create a wonderfully cosy ambience in your room.

As with any window treatment, one should not focus solely on the visual value, but also look at some of the practical benefits. Energy efficiency is the catch phrase nowadays, so homeowners are always looking for ways to be ‘greener citizens’. Patio door blinds generally provide very good insulation. How does this save you energy….? Simple, if you can keep the heat outside, you have to pay less for heating oil or gas. This reduces your CO2 emissions and helps keep former Vic-President Al Gore a happy man.

Patio door blinds are a firm favourite for many. You can be sure to find the perfect set at an affordable price with many superb brands to choose from.

Johnathan Gerber asked:

Choosing a patio door is just about as difficult as choosing a life partner. Ok maybe not that serious, but no doubt there is definitely a wide range to choose from, and this only complicates the whole process.

One of the most compelling debates is the question of whether to choose a fibreglass patio door or aluminum patio door. Why is this a tough decision? Well the main reason is because both are extremely durable material types that will probably (if well cared for) last you for years to come. So is the decision down to just decorative attributes…..? No, not really…

Let’s look at both first:

Fibreglass patio doors

Fibreglass doors are manufactured using fibreglass and resin. The fibreglass skin on the panels is an extremely durable material that will withstand just about any denting and cracking over time. Fibreglass patio doors also provide great insulation, effectively rendering this type of material more energy efficient. Maintenance is very easy and the range of products in the marketplace makes for a diversified array of options for homeowners.

Aluminum patio doors

Aluminum doors also are known for its durability. If properly cared for, aluminum doors will last you many years. Chief among this durability is due to the fact that this material does not rust. Maintenance is therefore straightforward and little effort is required – great if you’re always short on time.

So the inevitable is asked, ‘Where is the difference?’ The two main factors that will determine the outcome lies with their respective insulation capabilities and decorative attributes.

Decoratively aluminum patio doors go well with modern coastal type properties, instilling a very sleek style into your patio design. Fibreglass patio doors tend to go better with more classical designs, creating a warm feeling in your outdoor space. If insulation is an important factor and you wish to both save on your energy costs and keep the cold outside, fibreglass is the way to go. Although aluminim doors aren’t completely incapable of insulation, it generally does a worst job than fibreglass.

So there you have it. Keep in mind the design theme of your indoor and outdoor areas, as well as the prevailing weather condition in your area. Very soon you’ll other have a vote for fibreglass or a vote for aluminum.

Folding Sliding Doors or Traditional Patio Doors.

During the last couple of year the popularity of folding sliding doors has increased significantly with many people choosing them not only for new builds but also for replacing older patio doors. Here we look at the reasons why they have become so popular.

Patio doors traditionally were designed to allow better access from a room to the outside world, often featuring  full glazing to allow light into a room, the idea that these doors would just open back was very appealing, albeit restrictive in many cases.  Patio doors by their design are a two door system and therefore the limit to their size and width is very restrictive due to weight constraints.

This allowed a few manufacturers to test the market with a new concept Folding Sliding Doors, at first the sizes were restricted to standard Patio door sizes 1800mm, 2100mm and 2400mm designed as a 3 door system where the consumer could choose either a left hand or right hand opening. The benefit being that all the doors could be pushed to one side giving total access to the outside without any pillars or posts in the way.

This new concept was an instant success; consumers could see the benefits and the idea were quickly picked up by the TV makeover shows, thus giving the product even more publicity. Almost overnight the concept of Folding Sliding doors was an instant hit. Very quickly the range of sizes increased to keep pace with customer demands. As well as 1800mm, 2100mm and 2400mm sizes, 3000mm, 3600mm and 4200mm were added to the range giving from 3 doors to 6 door options. The larger options being available in various door configurations, again giving the consumer more choice and variety.

Anyone building a new property  could now have the concept of a large glass area secure when closed that would allow the outside world in once opened, in many cases the doors allowed for a large open space giving plenty of access without the need for unsightly posts or pillars.

Without doubt Folding Sliding doors are a truly inspired lifestyle concept that ingeniously and cost effectively facilitates bringing the outside into the home and extending the interior to the exterior, instantly creating increased living space along with a more salubrious environment in which to both live on a day to day basis and entertain.

Scott Wells asked:

When the weather is nice there is nothing more satisfying than opening a set of French doors allowing the fresh air into your home and making access to your garden a whole lot easier. Patio doors are great for entertaining meaning that your friends and family can enjoy the best of both worlds with easy access to your outside space and the inside of your home.

Nowadays there are a whole host of French doors to choose from such as patio doors, sliding doors, bi-fold doors, PVC doors and wooden doors to name just a few. Modern French doors are now full of the latest security features including safety hooks, anti pick devices on the locking system and reinforced steel frames for extra security. The safety of your home is paramount and long gone are the days of the French doors been a weak spot in your home. So much so that in many of these kinds of doors they now come with hinges which use weight circulation and hinge protectors which help to prevent break-ins. Sliding doors have stainless steel tracks which they glide on effortlessly allowing them to open and close with ease. French doors are designed to meet every need of the user whether that be low maintenance, ease of use or to be aesthetically pleasing.

There are an ever expanding range of French doors to choose from on the market. Ranging from highly decorative ornate stained glass designs to bespoke custom made doors to fit in with your very own personal design. The cost of French doors ranges drastically and it is certainly worth shopping around to ensure that you find the best deal for you. There is very little maintenance involved in double doors just the odd with a damp cloth every so often will keep them looking as good as new for years to come.

Deciding you want to replace old patio doors or have brand new ones put in is only the beginning. You are going to have a long decision process to go through. Firstly can you fit them yourself or are you going to get a professional to come in and do it for you. It can be a very tricky job so unless you are absolutely confident that you know what you are doing it is recommended that you get the professionals in. Then you need to decide on a style. It is worth having a look on the internet and then going for a look around a couple of show rooms to find out what is available and what you think will fit with your house. Once you have done this ask around friends and family if they know of any good fitters and then get at least three quotes from different firms.

Ellen Bell asked:

Sliding glass doors are very common in U.S. homes, usually as entry doors to a backyard, deck, or patio area.  If you are like many homeowners who live in older homes, you may find that your sliding glass door is in need of some basic repairs.  In this article, we’ll address some of the most common problems afflicting older sliding glass doors, as well as some simple and low cost repairs you can do yourself.

Houses will often settle with age and become slightly out of square.  This is a natural result of changes in the soil around your home’s foundation.  However, when a home settles, it sometimes results in doors that don’t open and close well, including sliding glass doors.  If your sliding glass door no longer slides properly, you should inspect it to see if it has fallen out of square.  Look at the top and bottom of the door.  If it’s out of square, you may notice a slight crack at the top or bottom, especially when you are attempting to slide the door back and forth.

The first and most simple solution to an out-of-square door is to adjust the door’s rolling wheels.  With most sliding doors, there are two roller wheel assemblies under the door, allowing the door to move back and forth easily in its track.  To adjust these wheels, look for small holes in the face of the lower frame.  Sometimes these holes will be plugged with small caps that are easily removed.  You can insert a screwdriver in these holes to turn the adjustment screws, moving the wheels higher or lower, as needed.

If this doesn’t correct the problem, another option is to shim the door.  This is slightly more work, because it involves removing the interior trim around the door.  Once the moldings are removed, you’ll see that the patio door frame was installed and shimmed into the opening.  You’ll probably also see that it is no longer perfectly in square.  You can take out or loosen the screws that secure the door frame in place, and then re-square the door, shimming it out as needed.  Once the door frame is square again, screw it back in place, and then you’ll be ready to reattach the trim molding again.  Re-squaring your door will not only make it operate more smoothly, but it will also make it more energy efficient, as this will eliminate small cracks that let in cold or hot air from outdoors.

Another common problem afflicting old patio doors is that the handle and latch mechanism may be worn or even broken.  A sliding glass door handle is very easy to replace, once you find the correct hardware.  If you cannot find the correct replacement handle at your local hardware store, look online or in specialty catalogs.  You may have to remove the old handle on your door and take some critical measurements to determine the correct replacement parts.  The important areas to measure are door thickness, the distance between holes drilled in the door, and the style of strike in the door jamb.  Replacing your old worn out hardware might also give you an opportunity to upgrade of a higher security handle and lock, if that is of importance to you and your family.

Lastly, older sliding glass doors can receive a much needed face-lift with some simple cleaning.  If your door’s frame is looking dull and worn, first get out the garden hose and wash it down.  Use a soft bristled brush and some lukewarm soapy water to remove the dirt from the exterior frame.  On the inside, the door frame can be wiped down with a damp rag, and the roller track can be vacuumed out and then wiped as well, which will also improve roller function.  Finally, if you wish, wax the frame with a good grade of automotive wax to bring back the door’s original luster.

Keeping your sliding glass door in good condition is one important part of maintaining your home.  And since repairing a patio door is far less expensive than buying a replacement, it only makes good sense to maintain your door for as long as possible.  With some basic preventative maintenance and occasional repair work, anyone can keep their sliding glass door in good condition for many years.

Derek Rogers asked:

As with most innovations, patio doors were once hailed the very latest development in their field: replacing French doors with the promise of an uninterrupted view of the garden, more natural daylight pouring into the home and unfettered access to the outdoors.

Patio doors are still hugely popular and have become increasingly sophisticated. However, they have not completely replaced French doors and the two very happily co-exist on the market, benefitting the home-owner who has a choice of door options to consider.

A fairly recent contender has made an entrance in this space - pardon the puns. Bifold doors offer yet more of what the patio started in terms of exploiting the width of the aperture and they do negate some of the drawbacks that came with sliding patio doors and that existed with French doors. It could be argued that bifold doors offer more elegance and certainly do come with increased flexibility. However, they are not a universal panacea and there are still choices to be made. This document aims to assist purchasers to make an informed decision on what kind of door is most beneficial to their lifestyle and property.

ELEGANCE

Bifolding doors are certainly considered by many to be a more attractive product than a patio door, and although patios are available in most colours and finishes, they do not have the flexibility of style that French doors offer. Neither do they have the high tech advantage of the bifolds that allow stacking to one side so that they almost disappear when not required, although to achieve this satisfactorily, choose carefully who manufactures them as the handles can be positioned so that they knock against the glass and prevent full opening.

In a period property, it may be necessary to match the style of existing windows and doors and this can be achieved to wonderful effect by sympathetic manufacturers of bespoke doors and windows. French doors can be built to complement any style, any period and any architectural design, something which cannot be achieved using patio doors, and although bifold doors may complement a property, they will always be modern in appearance. To some this juxtaposition of styles is unpalatable.

PRACTICALITY

Choice of door type is a matter of lifestyle and convenience. In a small flat with little outside space, the inconvenience of having to accommodate French doors can be impractical. With its ability to span an entire aperture and to open it up entirely, the bifold door can allow a balcony or garden to become part of a room on a pleasant day, in some cases doubling its size. However, these are more expensive and it may be necessary to go for the patio door to keep within budget. The patio has the advantage that one pane slides behind the other and still gives reasonable access and good line of sight to the outdoors. It is also a good solution where a door is required to be partially opened for ventilation without allowing animals or children to escape from the room. Although a bifold door can be configured to include a single opening door, it is either open or shut.

If there is space to open French windows, the door itself can be designed to be part of a pretty entrance to a small balcony or garden filled with flowers in a traditional property or even in a modern building. PVC is the least expensive material and designs are now so well advanced that a trained eye is required to see easily that a door is not timber.

Bifold doors have the additional advantage of flexible arrangement. There are numerous combinations of opening and folding, allowing for two leaves to open as French doors in the centre, or one leaf to open in traditional fashion when the rest of the door is closed. A useful feature for some is that the threshold can be designed to be completely flat - invaluable for wheelchair users, those with small children who may have difficulty negotiating a ledge, and for use, for example, round a swimming pool where swimmers move in and out of the building to use outside facilities in good weather.

SECURITY

Once upon a time, patio doors were easily penetrated from outside, even when locked. Security is now improved and the doors have become relatively secure. French doors have long been subject to rigorous conditions by the insurance companies and locks can be fitted at every level of security to prevent intrusion, depending on the material used.

However, the bifold doors offers increased security options and are good enough to use in commercial premises. For example, in garages which display high worth cars, vehicles can be driven in and out, or in restaurants where the doors are useful fully opened, diners can be allowed to spill out onto the pavement in the summer.

THERMAL

Bifold doors and patio doors are clear winners for thermal features in any material. Their modern brushes and seals have been developed to adhere to the stringent buildings regulations resulting from the current focus on climate change and the rise in fuel costs has encouraged home owners to seek efficient doors.

French windows are available with far greater draught proofing qualities than even ten years ago and there are numerous companies which can enhance the thermal efficiency of your French doors. However, particularly with timber French doors, thermal considerations are the last on the list after a property’s period, compatibility with existing windows and doors and - well - taste.

PVC or aluminium French doors benefit from the latest technology available in those materials, but if we compare traditional timber French doors with modern doors made from other materials, the timber French door cannot boast that it is equal in terms of energy efficiency. It may, however, be just what is needed to keep in sympathy with the style of a building.

SAFETY

A major issue with patio doors, which is still not entirely resolved, is that accidents all too frequently happen when the door is mistakenly thought to be open, but is in fact shut, as sometimes it is almost impossible to distinguish. If someone walks into it - or more worryingly a child runs into it - a glass door can cause significant damage. Safety glass is now fitted as standard so that the severe lacerations from broken glass that were seen in the early days can no longer occur, impact at speed with a sheet of glass on a head or face can nevertheless cause serious injury and care should be taken to ensure there is a warning to anyone using the door - especially little people!

To avoid this issue altogether, and specifically if warning notices do not appeal, consider a French door which will have narrower panes of glass and most likely cross bars to frame them, or bifold doors which have a maximum of 700mm wide leaves and are framed top and bottom to give an indication that the door is closed.

There is a massive choice of doors on the market with advantages and disadvantages to each. Further help can be sought from a reputable door specialist that sells a full range of door types so understands and is equally happy to sell any of them.

And once that decision is made, having taken into account what material is most suitable for your situation - aluminium, aluminium-clad timber, timber or PVCu - all that remains is to choose the colour - mahogany, oak, white, green, red ……
