I need to replace a patio door, the house has vinyl siding, what are the steps involved to do it myself?

dennis m asked:

I need to replace two patio doors that are rotting. I have vinyl siding on the house. Do I have to remove the siding to replace the door and to get at the existing doors nail fin? Can I cut the siding and replace the J channel with a wider one? I’m skilled in wood working and carpentering, but I need some direction. Thanks

How do I remove outside caulking from a recently installed patio door?

Sunday, March 8th, 2009
Ann H asked:

My contractor went wild with the caulking. It has dried clear but globbed. When I tried to paint the door, it looked even worse. I can’t remove the caulking but I need to clean up the mess. Pulling and sanding off the caulking didn’t work. It looks bad.

What’s the best way to fill a 1/2 inch gap around my sliding patio door that doesn’t fit my current frame?

Saturday, March 7th, 2009
Dinosaur asked:

What are the ( +) &( - ) of a door that doesn’t fit your frame to the “T”.

I want to buy a Pella sliding patio door from Lowes which has blinds between the windows. The installer for Lowes told me that he has to use drywall to accomodate the triple plan dimensions of the new sliding door. Does this sound right??

Where Can I Order a Sliding Screen For a Patio Door?

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009
Kate L asked:

I am an apartment manager and I need to find a company that will create sliding screens for glass patio doors. I like to buy about 12 at a time.

I know that Home Depot and Lowes carry slider screens, but they do not fit the apartments and I have been unable to find anywhere online that makes cheap slider screens! I just need something very basic. It does not need to be pet resistant, decorative, or retractable. The company we used to use charged about $45 a screen door and I am looking for something in the same price range.
Thank you!
I wanted to add that the problem with the ones Home Depot has (and can order) are that they are the type that you adjust to the right length and are simply too flimsy. =]

I have a giant wasp nest in my patio door upstairs. Will they go away?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009
happydawg asked:

Its about as big as a large grapefruit. Will the wasps just go away, so I can knock out the nest this fall or how should I get rid of this nest? It looks like a giant glob of beige colored stuff with holes all over it. If I open the door, they will attac me I suppose. How do I deal with this?
Oh yeah, there are about 50 wasps crawling all over it too.
